Big Bowls and Bigger Goals: Açaí Hut Makes Mueller Debut

July 30, 2018

Mention “Brazil,” and Austinites may immediately think of soccer, but the futbol-centric country has gained a cult following here in Texas for something completely different: the açaí berry. Açaí has officially come to Mueller’s Aldrich Street, with Açaí Hut’s first brick-and-mortar location now open next to Barre 3.

Co-owners – and siblings -- Angelica and Rodrigo Cid were born and raised in Brazil. Rodrigo emigrated to the United States to attend school in 2007 and has lived here ever since. Filled with an entrepreneurial spirit, he wanted to build a successful business and soon met another aspiring entrepreneur, Stephanie, who became a third co-owner and is now his wife. Angelica’s son inspired her to join her brother in the United States and start the açaí business.

With the success of their food trailer, the Cids believed the natural next step was to open a storefront to expand the açaí experience to more customers. “We knew Mueller was the right fit for us because of the sense of community, which reminds us of growing up in Brazil,” said Rodrigo.

“What makes us unique is our açaí itself,” Rodrigo explains. “It’s only able to be grown in the Amazon, though they’ve tried to grow it other places with no success.” Because of this, it’s difficult to make high-quality açaí available to those who want to enjoy it in other countries, especially because it can spoil within 48 hours of harvest. Açaí Hut uses a proprietary vendor to harvest the fresh berry and preserve the freshness, without watering down the product or adding unnecessary preservatives or sweeteners.

As for the taste, the co-owners describe it as a “sweet, earthy, berry flavor,” but those who want to truly understand what açaí tastes like should come try it for themselves. And for those who want to bring their family, the new location is offering “boats” – a large, shareable serving of the frozen treat.

As for what’s next, the trio isn’t stopping at their new brick-and-mortar; they have plans to promote charitable endeavors, including helping educate the underpriveledged children in their home country.

Açaí Hut is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The full menu can be viewed on AçaíHut.com.
