A Year in Review: Reflecting on 2018

It’s been another eventful year at Mueller. Looking back at 2018, we welcomed new developments, restaurants and retailers; hosted family-friendly events; earned prestigious green building recognition and much more. Here are some of Mueller’s top 2018 moments…

More employees are coming to Mueller. Just last week: two big announcements. Austin Energy plans to consolidate their operations with a 275,000-square-foot building on Mueller Blvd. between Philomena and Garcia streets. And, Shorenstein Properties plans to build a 235,000-square-foot building for multiple tenants and 20,000 square feet of ground-floor retail on Aldrich Street across from Alamo Drafthouse.

Aldrich Street continued to grow with additions of new retailers and restaurants. In 2018, several restaurants and retailers officially called Aldrich Street home, including Açaí Hut, Colleen’s Kitchen, Lady Quackenbush’s Cakery, Lilla & Beth, Lash Lounge and Orangetheory Fitness. Additionally, the community welcomed the addition of the Mueller Outdoor Market, featuring an eclectic group of vendors: Rocket Electrics, Soto & Co, Lemon Drop Children’s Shop and Sage Soul and To the Moon. Texas Mutual Insurance’s headquarters opened. In October, approximately 700 Texas Mutual employees moved into their new headquarters on Aldrich Street between Philomena and Garcia streets. Kerbey Lane Cafe also officially opened earlier this month on the ground floor of the building while Primrose School of Austin is scheduled to join in late spring.  

The Mueller Farmers’ Market expanded to Wednesday evenings. Originally only open on Sundays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the popularity of the Mueller Farmers’ Market in 2018 led to the introduction of the Wednesday evening market from 5 to 8 p.m. More than 40 local vendors participate, offering fresh vegetables, artisan foods and beyond.

Mueller was recognized as one of the most sustainable communities in the nation. The U.S Green Building Council (USGBC) presented the Leadership Award to Mueller and the City/Catellus partnership for being at the forefront of the green building movement. AMLI on Aldrich also earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification. This distinction marked the 15th building in Mueller to officially earn LEED status, with more sustainable buildings on the way.

The Mueller community was treated to several family-friendly events in 2018. Attendees had a ball at the Aldrich Street Fair, enjoyed an evening under the stars at Movies at Lake Park and celebrated the holidays with the 13th Annual Tower Lighting. More homes and apartments continue to be added at Mueller, including those for families who are income-qualified. Three new multifamily residences joined Mueller in 2018: Aldrich 51AMLI on Aldrich and Overture at Mueller for a total of nearly 760 units. Additionally, construction began on Mueller’s latest neighborhood with nearly 300 homes under construction. Foundation Communities also broke ground on The Jordan, a 132-unit complex for lower-income families, which is slated to open in 2019.

Mary Elizabeth Branch Park partially opened. Visitors can now enjoy a small, off-leash dog run, two sand volleyball courts, an exercise area, playscape equipment and a great lawn in Mueller’s seventh public park located at the northern end of Aldrich and Philomena streets. Next spring, the remainder of the park – including the hillside, rain gardens and water feature – should be ready for further enjoyment.
